A Rochester chef got burned on charges of insurance fraud and attempted grand larceny in connection with a scheme he allegedly cooked up so he could pay off $5,000 in gambling debts, the New York State Insurance Department has reported.
Hung Tran, 24, of 99 Villa St., was released from jail pending a future court date following his arrest by the New York State Insurance Frauds Bureau and Rochester Police. He faces up to seven years in jail if found guilty.
According to the charges, Tran, an executive chef, filed a false report that his car had been stolen so he could obtain insurance money. He filed the report after allegedly giving the car to a bookmaker for gambling debts.
